“OROCHI!!” is a restored version of a 1925 sword film (director: Buntaro Futagawa) starring the renowned sword film actor Bando Tsumasaburo (nicknamed Bantsuma). The film will be screened with English subtitles. A musical score composed for this silent movie by Yasuaki Shimizu, Japan’s leading saxophone player, will be played live by an orchestra on the day of the screening. The speaker for the silent movie is Raiko Sakamoto and the special guest is Yuki Ota (silver medalist, fencing, men’s individual foil at the Beijing Olympics).
The movie is to be screened in association with the 21st Tokyo International Film Festival.

Yasuaki Shimizu
Yasuaki Shimizu is a producer, saxophonist and composer. In 1978, he made his debut to release his first album. In the beginning of the 80's he released five albums including Utakata no Hibi (‘83), as a founder of the experimental rock band Mariah. On the other hand, Shimizu released solo album to pursue of more alternative expression through music. From 1983 he started the project as Saxophonettes. From 1985 through 1991 Shimizu moved his stronghold to London and Paris and he released 3 albums. And he had played to collaborate with various musicians. From 1996 to 1999 Shimizu arranged Bach’ Suites for Unaccompanied Cello for tenor saxophone, and he played and recorded it by himself. It was the first attempt in the world. He won the Best Production Award for Bach Box released in 1997 at the Japan Record Awards. Shimizu is highly regarded as a producer and music arranger, he engaged in composing various kind of music. In 2006 he invited four saxophonists to his project and he re-started the project as Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes. In 2007 Shimizu released "Pentatonica" which contains his original works in pentatonic scale. Shimizu is also curious about pictures, so that he has produced music for movie and video, moreover installation and contemporary dance. And he has collaborated with the creator of the other field. In late years he composed the sound track of Mitsuo Yanagimachi's " Who's Camus Anyway? (06)". |

Raiko Sakamoto
Sakamoto had a desire to be a cartoonist In his childhood and he is an ardent admirer of Shigeru Mizuki. He had devoted himself to write pictures of ghost and apparitions. However his interest turned to movies when he was a second grader at junior high school and he made up his mind to become a silent-film narrator.
In 1997 Sakamoto took part in the study group for the art of storytelling, which sponsored by Matsuda Film Productions and he started to train himself there. In November 2000 his career started as a silent-film narrator and he has appeared on stage at small theaters, movie theaters, welfare facilities, shrines and temples.
He has performed mainly historical film like “Kurama-Tengu”, “BANBA NO CHUTARO MABUTA NO HAHA”, “Chuji Kunisada”, “Kid Commotion”, “Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari” and Chaplin’s “The Adventurer", they are about 50 films.
In 2004, one day his interest in writing pictures suddenly has come back. And he started to perform his own animation.

Yuki Ota
Ota is a Japanese foil fencer and belongs to Kyoto Club.
Ota begins fencing under influence of his father when he was third grader. In 1995 he won first prize in the boy's national convention. After that he defeated all tournaments.
When he was a student at Heian High School, he accomplished the splendid feat to win the championship in three seasons. In 2002 he won the tournament in Japan National Championship at the youngest record. At that time Ota was 17 years old.
He participated in the Athens Olympic Games in 2004 and finished in ninth place. The record is the best for Japanese foil fencer. Also in Asia Championship in 2006 and in Japan National Championship in 2007 he won the titles.
His play is characterized by sharply offence and his ability was praised as "The greatest talent in history of field of Japanese fencing", and he is one of the best fencers in Japan.
It still remains in our memory that Ota won Olympic silver in the Beijing in 2008 and it was the first medal in Japan for fencers. |
