Despite a number of emerging filmmakers making successful debuts at international festivals, they are forced to contend with minimal support in Japan and therefore miss many opportunities. In Canada, independent filmmakers procure various support, from production through to distribution, from diverse public and private organizations. The National Film Board of Canada (NFB), the hub of animation, is one of such supporters. In addition, international co-productions are strongly encouraged in Canada, and we could benefit from new ideas on how to promote co-productions with Japanese producers and filmmakers through knowing more about the successive activities of the NFB who celebrate their 70th anniversary this year.
