| Event Overview | The PFF Award is a film festival in which the main feature is the self produced film competition which accepts entries from the general public. The theme of the festival is “the discovery and nurturing of new film talent.” The total number of submitted films as of 2009 was 17,556 and over 506 films were selected in the competition. Among those who participated in the competition, more than 60 people are now currently working as film directors. In recent years, winners of the PFF Award have received high recognition for their work both in Japan and overseas; while one winner of the PFF Award was awarded with the New Director’s Award by the Directors Guild of Japan, another received the grand prize at an overseas film festival. Incidentally, “NAKED OF DEFENSES” which won last year’s PFF Award Grand Prix, also won a grand prix at the Pusan International Film Festival in the section of “New Currents” which is a competition for young directors from Asia. |

| Theme in 2009 | Beginning this year, the Pia Film Festival will be cosponsored with National Film Center at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, which is Japan’s only institution devoted to cinema, and the festival will be held on a brand new stage. |
