This year the 11th Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, a festival held every other year since its start in 1989, a year that saw a number of events that would not insignificantly impact the future, including the Tiananmen Square protests and the fall of the Berlin Wall, will be held. This festival presents the range of true human feelings from around the world, depicting stark reality, hope, and ourselves. Don't miss this opportunity, which comes only once every two years.

Event Overview This year's international competition received the largest number of entries ever: 1141 from 110 countries. In addition, the festival's New Asian Currents can be expected to provide even more thrilling films than most years. The festival will offer a full range of special collections as well. These include New Docs Japan, introducing works examining Japanese society from a variety of perspectives, the first Japanese screening of “Against Cinema,” a Guy Debord retrospective, and Islands/Shima, examining the physicality of islands with a focus on Asia. The festival also will present a diverse range of projects including the EUNIC project Tomorrow’s a Day Away, depicting the realities of young people around the world today, and Films about Yamagata, a multifaceted exploration of the relations between Yamagata and film.
